Earlier this year I shared the news that I’d be leading the art strand of ‘When Art Meets Acting’, a project run by St Margaret College in collaboration with Cottonera Community Service, Agenzija Appoġġ, Aċċess Community Centre and the NGO Tgħanniqa. Now that the project has come to a close, I’m looking back on everything the students achieved.
Over the months of weekly sessions, my group of young artists worked through still life drawing, learning to observe and render real objects before developing their own creative compositions. What started as simple studies grew into individual bodies of work, each shaped by the student’s own eye and interests.
The project reached its finale with a collective exhibition held at San Anton Palace, Attard, bringing together the work of students from all three strands, art, drama and filming. It was wonderful to see the pieces I, worked on with my students displayed alongside such a range of mediums, from drawings and compositions to the short films produced by the drama and filming groups. Seeing everything together in one space really reflected the spirit of the project: young people exploring different artistic paths and arriving at a shared celebration of their creativity.
I want to thank Simon Schembri once again for inviting me to be part of this project from the start, and I’m incredibly proud of how far each of my students came — from their first still life sketches to seeing their finished work exhibited at San Anton Palace.
