This year’s edition of Rotta Ta’ L-Arti brought together almost 170 artists and 350 exhibits, marking a special milestone as the exhibition celebrated its 6th anniversary. The inauguration took place at PN’s headquarters in Pieta, opened by PN Secretary Mr Paul Borg Olivier alongside Assistant Secretary Jean Pierre Debono.
The evening’s second speech came from the Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, who spoke about the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local art scene. He highlighted the new art funds co financed by the European Union, as well as the growing number of scholarships the government is investing in for art and design. The Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with the impressive standard of work on display at this year’s exhibition.
He encouraged local artists and craftsmen to take part in various European Union programs, expressing his belief that Maltese talent is moving in the right direction and holding its own when compared to other European countries.
I was proud to take part in this year’s exhibition with a 6ft high wooden sculpture representing a water drop, entitled “U min mejjet ghal qatra.” The piece was first exhibited at the Earth Garden festival back in June, and seeing it find a new home at Rotta Ta’ L-Arti felt like a wonderful continuation of its journey.
Rotta Ta’ L-Arti 2011 runs from the 9th to the 30th of September at Dar Partit Nazzjonalista, Triq Herbert Ganado, Pieta, Malta. The exhibition is open during normal business hours, from 9:00 to 17:00.
