The Maltese phrase is part of a longer proverb: “Min hu mejjet fis-sakra u min hu mejjet għal qatra.” It means some people have more than enough, while others have nothing at all.
My latest installation was inspired by the serious water problems many countries face today. In Malta, many people dig illegal boreholes to pump out water. This causes a lot of waste, since much of the water pumped out is never even used properly.
In poorer countries, and in places like Palestine, people often cannot get clean water at all. This is not because the water does not exist, but because of ongoing political conflict in the region.
This year, Earth Garden is focusing on this global water crisis, and how it affects people everywhere.
My installation is shaped like one huge drop of water. It represents how precious even a single drop can be, something many of us take for granted. The piece is built from many small strips of recycled wood, joined together one by one. Each strip on its own is small and weak, but together they form something strong. This represents the unity we need as people if we want to protect water, one of the most basic rights every human being deserves.
